Tories on Tour: Brussels

Last week a number of BUCF members joined Manchester CF and Leeds CF in the first, of what I am sure is to be many, Tories on Tour event. The trip took us to the European Parliament where we were welcomed by North West Conservative MEP Jacqueline Foster, who took us on a tour of the Parliament, informed us on the workings of the Conservatives in the European Parliament and later on joined us for a group dinner. Now, I am not know for my love for the European Union (and this trip didn’t change that), however, it was extremely interesting to find out how an organisation which affects all our lives works. Furthermore, until we do achieve freedom from the EU it is comforting to know that there are Conservative MEPs such as Jacqueline Foster working hard for the best interests of Britain. All of us at BUCF would like to thank Jacqueline Foster and her team for the hospitality we received during our visit.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Luke Springthorpe from Manchester CF who did much of the organising for this trip and ensured that our members received much more than a mere day trip. After the tour at Parliament we stayed in Belgium for a further two days taking in the sights and sounds of the nation. While in Brussels we attended their Armistice Day Parades to pay respect to the brave soldiers who died in Belgium during both World Wars. This was followed by a cultural tour of the city which included many waffles, much chocolate and of course Belgium Beer. On Friday we moved the tour on to the beautiful city of Bruges where a trip to a Brewery was followed by a horse-drawn carriage ride around the city.

Although the trip was not without its drama; bomb scares/fires at New Street, followed by a race down to London in a taxi, confusion on the Metro and first aid action for a Belgian citizen by our very own President; Sophie Shrubsole, we can all definitely agree that it was a memorable and extremely enjoyable trip. I know I speak for everyone from BUCF when I ask; where next?
