CF Committee

Dan O’Doherty - Chairman
Dan is currently a second year studying Political Science here at the University of Birmingham. Dan has always actively engaged himself in the political process, joining the Conservative party at age 16 and becoming a member of BUCF upon arrival at University in 2006. An unapologetic Thatcherite Dan can often be seen around campus with a rolled copy of the Telegraph under his arm ready to beat off socialists! Having said this Dan is more than happy to enage in cordial political debate with anyone over a pint at the local. His motto is people before politics in keeping with his desire to bridge the political divide as Chairman.

John Hefford - Vice Chair
John is currently a second year studying Political science here at Birmingham. An ardent Thatcherite John is a passionate believer in social mobility and argues passionately that the Conservative party is the true party of individual aspiration. In his spare time John can often be found in the pub, usually with the Chairman and a large group of alco-frolics! John is always up for a drink, debate or both as is more often the case! He puts the ‘vote’ in devoted when it comes to Chelsea FC!

Laura Markham - Vice Chair (External)
Laura is a political science student in her second year at the University. Laura has been a member of the Conserrvative party since she was 16 years of age, becoming interested in politics when she studied History at school. Laura is looking forward to completing further work experience with her local Conservative MP, Andrew McKay, during the summer vacation in Westminster. In her spare time she enjoys playing tennis, going to the gym, socialising with friends and engaging in good old fashioned political debate!

Gareth Moore - Treasurer
Garerth is currently in his first year at the University of Birmingham, studying Ancient and Medieval History. Thatcherite to the core and very politically minded, he’ll defend his views on a wide range of issues against anyone, typically communists or his socialist family. A lover of history, Royalty and most things British, he can normally be found nagging someone political, in a book, or where-ever there is alcohol, usually not at the same time! He hopes to bring his tight-fistedness and wild spending skills to BUCF to get the most of the budget available.

Laura Blyth - Society Secretary
Laura is a second year student at Birmingham studying Natural Science. Despite being the non-humanities member of the committee she has a lively interest in politics, is an active member of the Conservative party and has been for the last 3 years. Bein above anything else, a very liberal Tory, Laura is a Thatcherite and very proud of her opinions, though she’d much rather someone was a staunch socialist than politically apathetic! She can usually be found pouring pints in the comedy club where she works, reading Harry Potter somewhere, or failing that anywhere that will sell her gin!

Mathew Roper - Events Officer
Mathew is currently in his second year here at Birmingham studying Ancient and Medieval History. A staunch Thatcherite Mathew is often engaged in heated political debate but can easily hold his own. He is someone who is highly political, deeply Conservative and a passionate Euro-sceptic. He believes Britain should remain Britain and the EU has no right undermining British sovereignty. Having said this Mathew is a great lover of anything and everything Italian and can often frequents the ski slopes of the Italian Alps. As events officer Mathew hopes to consult the members as to what exactly they want from their society therefore making events more in line with the wishes of BUCF’s members.
