Happy New Year!

Well it’s very nearly 2007. I’ll be spending my evening darting round Birmingham trying to cram in as many free drinks as possible! However, I think 2006 will take some beating. Without sounding too pleased with ourselves, I think we can say Conservative Future has made terrific progress over the last few months. I’m particularly proud of this website and the blog, which has gone to show the importance of the internet in bringing people together and informing debate. Improving the site is a number one priority for 2007, a measure of which will be our viewing figures. Talking of which we have nearly had 10,000 unique hits since we started to blog in mid October which isn’t bad going at all. To accompany this we have hosted a number of social events and have attracted some high profile speakers to the University. The growth of City Branch in Birmingham which celebrated it’s first annual reception a few weeks ago shows the Conservatives are on the offensive outside the University too. Starting this year the Party generally has experienced a return and looks in good shape as we head into 2007. So, Happy New Year and may 2007 be even better.

Yes, we have done brilliantly in 2006, but we need to go one better in 07. Happy new year to all our members and blog readers.

Here’s some targets for 2007 in Birmingham.

Help us win all 8 wards in Northfield and Edgbaston, take Oscott and Erdington off the Labour incumbents and get us topping 1,000 votes in Ladywood.

Big stretch target would be to overtake Labour in Selly Oak so that we can mount a credible challenge on the Libs next time around.

Congratulations chaps – there is no doubt you have strengthened BUCF from practically nothing to, well, something. To give you some direct praise, and support my treasurer’s comments, the website is looking very good and you appear to be holding the odd social. From experience, however, turning a talking shop or social club into a campaigning beast is an entirely different ball game. As good a front this website is for BUCF, an old phrase involving a fur coat and no knickers might come springing to the minds of some cynics – I count myself with the converted, of course ;o)

As for praguetory’s targets, I’m not sure it is possible for you to take all 8 wards in Northfield and Edgbaston until 2008 (and even then I think you’ll be struggling) – Oscott will be greater challenge than Erdington (though I’m bound to have high hopes for both), and despite Peter Smallbone’s patchy efforts in my own ward, surely the Tories smashing 1000 in Ladywood is about as likely as PT’s final target?!

All the best of luck for 2007 (I hope you need it, in the nicest way possible!)

    John

I have to say I am impressed at how good-natured and mature these debates are.
